Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) generates about 80% of the province’s required electricity, and sells it to Newfoundland Power as well as industrial, residential and commercial customers. Hydro distributes electricity to 35,000 residential customers in over 200 communities in Labrador and rural areas of Newfoundland. Hydro (and other subsidiaries of Nalcor Energy) employs more than 1450 employees.

Hydro’s system is vast and complex – with nine hydroelectric generating stations with 16 separate generating units, totaling 939MW (ex. Bay d’Espoir, Granite), our oil-fired Holyrood plant (490MW), three gas turbines (in Stephenville, Hardwoods, and Happy Valley Goose Bay, totaling 127MW), 25 diesel plants (from Nain to St. Brendan’s totaling 52.6MW), over 3,700 km of high-voltage transmission lines and 3,300 km of low voltage distribution lines. We have more than 800 power and instrument transformers and over 175 breakers.

Newfoundland Power purchases approximately 90% of the electricity they sell from Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and generates the balance at their own hydroelectric stations across the island. Newfoundland Power distributes electricity on the island portion of the province to over 256,000 customers. Newfoundland Power has approximately 650 employees.

Newfoundland Power operates 23 hydro generating plants, two diesel plants, three gas turbine facilities and 130 substations. Maintains approximately 11,000 km of transmission and distribution lines.) Numerous companies provide services to the electric utilities in the maintenance and construction of generation, transmission and distribution facilities.
